Work with Us

What it is like to work at CRGD, who we look for, and how our hiring process works.

CRGD is a small institution with large ambitions. Everyone here does real work from the first week: researchers write, program staff teach, and everyone talks to the people our work is meant to serve.

Who we look for

We hire for curiosity, care and clarity.

  • Curiosity. You want to understand how things actually work, not just how they are supposed to work.
  • Care with evidence. You check sources, question your own assumptions and say clearly what you do not know.
  • Clarity. You can explain a complicated idea to a busy person in a few sentences.
  • Public spirit. You want your work to be useful to people beyond your own field.

Formal qualifications matter less than these qualities. We welcome applicants from all disciplines and backgrounds, including people who have worked in government, journalism, civil society, law, business or the armed forces.

What we offer

  • Meaningful work on questions that affect millions of people
  • Mentoring from experienced researchers and practitioners
  • Time for learning, including support for courses and conferences
  • A collegial, non hierarchical workplace where junior colleagues are heard
  • Fair pay, published in each job advertisement

How we hire

  1. Application. A CV, a short cover letter and, for research roles, one writing sample.
  2. Shortlisting. Every application is read by at least two people. We aim to tell every applicant the outcome.
  3. Task. Shortlisted candidates complete a short, paid task similar to the work of the role.
  4. Conversation. An interview with the people you would work with most closely.
  5. Decision. We aim to decide within three weeks of the closing date.

Equal opportunity

CRGD is an equal opportunity employer. We actively encourage applications from women, persons with disabilities, people from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other historically marginalised communities, and people from outside the major cities. Tell us about any adjustments you need during the hiring process and we will make them.
