How the state is governed in practice: the legislature, the executive, political parties and the political culture that shapes public decisions.
Kerala’s politics is intensely participatory, closely contested and often polarised. This vertical studies the institutions and practices of government and politics with the same evidence based approach CRGD applies to policy.
Policy outcomes depend on how governments are formed, how legislatures function and how parties compete. Strong scrutiny of the executive improves decisions. Weak scrutiny allows mistakes to go unchallenged. Understanding the political system is essential for anyone who wants to change policy.
CRGD is non partisan. This vertical does not support or oppose any party, and its researchers follow CRGD’s policy on political neutrality.
How much time does the legislature spend scrutinising laws and budgets, and how could it spend more?
How do coalitions shape the policies that governments adopt?
What is the relationship between political parties and civil society organisations?
How does Kerala's political culture compare with that of other states?
