Economy

The structure and prospects of Kerala's economy, and how growth can create good jobs, public revenue and broad prosperity.

Kerala’s economy has long followed its own path: strong services, high consumption, large remittance inflows and a modest industrial base. This vertical studies how that model is changing and what policy can do to secure the next phase of growth.

Why it matters

Remittances have supported household consumption and construction for decades, but the pattern of migration is changing. The state needs investment that creates jobs suited to its educated workforce, and revenue to sustain its public services. Small and medium enterprises employ many people but struggle with credit, regulation and markets.

How we work

  • Economic monitoring. We publish regular notes on the state economy using official data.
  • Enterprise studies. We survey firms to understand what helps and hinders them.
  • Investment climate. We compare regulatory processes with other states.
  • Household economics. We study how prices, credit and income affect families.

The vertical works closely with Governance, Finance and Accountability, Employment and Maritime Economy.

Questions we are asking

  1. 01

What will drive Kerala's growth over the next decade as remittances change?

  2. 02

Why does the state attract less private investment than its human capital would suggest?

  3. 03

What do small firms need most from government?

  4. 04

How do national economic decisions show up in Kerala household budgets?
