Campaign for Fiscal Transparency
An effort to persuade the state to publish a single annual statement of all its extended liabilities, including borrowing by state owned bodies and guarantees.
The goal
That the state publishes, alongside each budget, a single statement of all borrowing by state owned bodies that is serviced from the budget, all guarantees with an estimate of their likely cost, and a ten year repayment schedule.
Why
As our brief Bringing Off Budget Borrowing into the Light argues, transparency about the full picture of public obligations is a precondition for an informed debate about borrowing.
What we are doing
- Briefing legislators of all parties and the relevant legislative committees
- Publishing an annual reading of the budget that assembles the available information
- Working with journalists to explain the issue to the public
Progress
[Placeholder: record progress honestly, including setbacks.]
Results
- [Placeholder: record each concrete step, for example a meeting with a legislative committee or a change in published documents]
